Design for a low-budget conversion of the upstairs of a pub in Melbourne into travelers' accommodation. Instead of going for the usual dormitory style backpackers hostel setup, we recognized the market for backpackers who are here to stay for longer periods and the lack of cosy rooms where they can call home.

As a measure to cut down renovation costs, we devised a system of vertical timber battens that is to draw attention away from the condition of the existing wall finishes. They also provide a universal system for mounting new lighting fixtures and furniture whilst keeping the scheme visually cohesive. This is an exercise in specifying inexpensive materials and furniture in a creative manner.
