A new Japanese bar + restaurant replacing an already successful Japanese restaurant of several years. Located in the inner city of Sydney with a seating capacity is for 55 people. The restaurant takes up the entire ground floor and extends into the rear courtyard.

Our design for the front section is to create a defined sense of enclosure, taking on metaphors such as Japanese lacquered lunch boxes, tatami mat rooms and wrapping of sushi. Careful proportioning of panels utilizing off-the-shelf sheet sizes minimize wastage and create a sense of rhythm.

The outdoor area at the back needed an acoustic room to reduce noise from diners to neighbouring residences. The design is made from twin wall polycarbonate sheeting of two different translucency, highlighting the visual connection to the large eucalyptus tree near by.
